James Bullough Lansing, an American audio engineer and loudspeaker designer who lived from 1902 to 1949, founded JBL. The two audio companies that bear his name, Altec Lansing and JBL, are what Lansing is most famous for. Harman International, a division of Samsung Electronics, is the owner of JBL. Douglas Shearer created his own loudspeakers in 1933 after becoming disenchanted with those made by Western Electric and RCA. Altec Service Corporation acquired Lansing Manufacturing Company in 1941. Lansing founded Lansing Sound after his contract with Altec Lansing expired in 1946. After changing its name to James B. Lansing, Lansing relocated to its first private building. Lansing's close working relationship with its main source of Alnico V magnetic material was crucial to the early success of JBL. The JBL loudspeaker company was established by James B. Lansing Following the passing of his business partner, Altec Decker, in 1939, Lansing established the JBL loudspeaker company. Lansing struggled to pay bills and ship goods after Decker passed away; as a result, he killed himself in 1949. Bill Thomas is credited with reviving the business and launching a period of rapid expansion. The JBL 4320 Series studio monitor was launched by Capitol Records in Hollywood and quickly became the de facto standard monitor for EMI, the parent company. The JBL L-100 was the company's most popular loudspeaker model at the time. JBL monitors were used in recording studios in greater numbers by 1977 than all other brands combined. With improved crossovers, the L-series designs L15, L26, L46, L56, L86, L96, L112, L150, and later the L250 were released. The designs were once more updated and redone in the middle of the 1980s with a new titanium-deposition tweeter diaphragm.
