Acer is a multinational Taiwanese hardware and electronics corporation specializing in advanced electronics technology. Desktop PCs, laptop PCs (clamshells, 2-in-1s, convertibles, and Chromebooks), tablets, servers, storage devices, virtual reality devices, displays, smartphones, and peripherals are among its offerings, as are gaming PCs and accessories under the Predator brand. As of September 2022, Acer is the world's fifth-largest PC vendor by unit sales. Acer purchased Gateway in the United States and Packard Bell in Europe in 2007. Due to the company's poor financial performance, chairman and CEO J.T. Wang and president Jim Wong resigned in 2013. Acer spun off its smart gadget unit GadgeTek into a separate company in September 2018. Acer announced the PLANET9.gg social platform in 2019 to provide game analytics and other services. Acer and Founder Technology signed a memorandum of understanding in 2010 to strengthen their long-term PC business collaboration. Acer paid US$320 million for iGware Inc. (formerly BroadOn) in July 2011. The goal is to create Acer Cloud to enter the cloud computing market. Acer employs over 7,713 people worldwide and operates in 40 countries/territories as of September 2022. Acer's board of directors authorized the formation of a joint venture with Starbreeze AB in June 2016 to design, manufacture, promote, market, and sell StarVR Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Displays. Acer became AOPEN Inc.'s largest corporate shareholder in 2017.
