AlliedSignal Inc. and Honeywell Inc. merged to form Honeywell in 1999. It produces engineered materials, specialty chemicals, plastics, industrial, commercial, and residential control systems, and aerospace and automotive products. Around 125,000 people were employed worldwide in 2000. Its origins can be traced back to 1886 when Albert M. Butz was the first to use thermostats to control furnace dampers. Minneapolis-Honeywell developed the first automatic pilot for mass production in 1942. Its flight controls assisted in the launch of Explorer 1, the first American satellite, in 1958. Gyroscopes were added to its product offering in 1954 after the company acquired Dolecam Corp. A joint venture to build computer systems was established with Raytheon a year later. The company continued to work with computers, initially with mainframes and then for a brief period with personal computers. The Signal Gasoline Company, a local gas station chain in California, was the predecessor to Signal Companies. It grew primarily as a result of numerous mergers and acquisitions. In the most significant industrial merger to date, Allied Corporation and Signal Companies merged in 1985. In 1993, Allied Signal, the initial name of the combined company, was changed to Allied Signal.
